Well gang took a couple days from the forum to go to York and take a tour of the Harley plant. This was a special tour set up for dealers and staff from their shops. We had 31 people go. Of course Lunchbox and I went. We had an extended tour which included going to the CVO plant. Really very interesting. Lunchbox and I stayed in York last night. That allowed us to check out Lancaster Harley. It was a really good trip. The only down side was we had to rent a car to go. Too cold still to take the bikes. I'd recommend going to see the plant.

Can't take camera on H-D plan tours...
nor cell phones, pagers, knives of any sort, and so on....

I darned near had to strip naked when I went on the tour in KC a couple of years ago. (A scarey thought - I'd have emptied the plant.)

I'll second the recommendation to go. I went last year during the Sept. open house. Pretty neat to see how all those parts are made.

My company designs special machines, and in '01, we did an automated system for MoCo-Powertrain in Milwaukee to magnetize and gage alternator stators. I got to visit Powertrain several times. One of the coolest things for me was their lobby- it's a combination lobby, museum, and gift shop. Don't see that in a GM or Ford plant! Didn't see a whole lot, we only got as far as what we were specifically working on, but I did get to see their re-man engine cell on the way in and out.

I see and read a lot of sideways and negative stuff about Harley-Davidson in forums like these. I'd like to say this- H-D has one of the most positive and forward thinking policies with their suppliers. I've been doing this for 30 years, and H-D is among the best.:D (worst- Chrysler, IMHO:mad )

I have toured many high technology manufacturing sites in the US (airplanes, satellites, rockets, submarines) and when I toured the Power Train plant in Milwaukee several years ago (where they build the Sportster engine), it was very impressive. In fact it convinced me to buy a Harley.

Two years ago Lunchbox and I stopped for my first ever tour of the factory. We did take some pictures in the gift shop area. I took one of him on a Road King. He looks like Santa Claus on vacation.
