Last year I was following my friend Dennis on his Ultra Classic when a deer ran accross the road straight at him. The deer used Dennis thigh and back seat as a spring board to get over his bike. Fortunately it didn't knock Dennis off his bike. The only damage was deer hair all over Dennis back and a few scuffs on the tour pack. Dennis is a sh*t magnet and I get a kick out of using him as a mine sweeper for me.

Man gets 70 months for crash that cost motorcyclist his leg

09:52 AM PDT on Tuesday, July 28, 2009

MICHAEL ROLLINS, Kgw.com

A man driving drunk who struck a motorcylist last October was sentenced Monday to 70 months in prison. The victim was Robert Schlick, a popular downtown Portland barber who lost his leg in the crash.

Paul M. Conklin, 24, was convicted last week of second-degree assault and DUII. He was also convicted of criminal possession of a forged instrument for an altered temporary vehicle registration.

Conklin crossed the center line on Southwest Scholls Ferry Road and 86th on a sweeping curve by Portland Golf Club. He struck Schlick, who was riding his Harley V-Rod to his downtown job. Schlick layed the bike down to avoid a direct collision, but the move cost him his left leg.

"It's kind of an instinct," Schlick told KGW while recovering from the crash. "You realize you're going to have to sacrifice the bike for yourself. Had I continued on, I probably would have impaled myself on the car.”

Hours after the crash, Conklin had a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit. He had a prior conviction of drunk driving and completed a diverson program for that crime. He was arrested in January after the Washington County sheriff's office reconstructed the crash and presented findings to a grand jury.

Motorcyclist caught doing 130 mph on way to court

06:37 AM PDT on Tuesday, July 28, 2009

ARLINGTON, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon State Police say a trooper pulled over a motorcyclist who had been clocked at 130 mph on Interstate 84 near the spot where the Deschutes River joins the Columbia.

State police said the driver told the trooper he knew that he was driving too fast but was trying to get his female passenger to an 8:30 a.m. court appointment Monday in Bend.

She didn't make it.

KVAL-TV says the trooper arrested 31-year-old William Niswanger, of Sandy, on several outstanding traffic warrants as well as for investigation of reckless driving, driving while suspended and recklessly endangering another person.

PLANB NOTE: He was picked up at 8:16am...reckon he could be in Bend by 8:30am, Dean? He ONLY had to go 170 more miles in 14 minutes to get his girlfriend to court on time!

Stupid is as stupid does. Some are born stupid, some make it their life's goal to become stupid, but whatever the case, both daily go out of their way to prove to rest of us that they are stupid. I do not profess to know God's Plan, but there are some days when He certainly confuses me with It.

Afew years back my buddy was killed exactly the same way on a back county two loane black top. It was late morning and there were little hills on both sides of the road. No traffic. They saw the deer up on the hill they slowed down to go by, as they did the first deer jumped right into the chest Tony and they fell over. The deer ran off. The coronor said just the inpact from the deer into his chest killed him instantly. He was riding a dresser. RIP T Gag.

A tough bike week in the Pac Norwest for sure! A special friend of mine on the coast just let me know her brother in Port Angeles was in a motorcycle accident two days ago...she was camping and didn't have service on her cell phone so when she got home today her Mom had left numerous messages on her home phone...after she talked to her Mom she e-mailed me these details:

"I got to talk to everyone in PA, my brother and his "on again, off again" g/f were T-boned in an intersection. He said the guy in the van looked him in the eyes and gunned it, trying to beat him through. My brother has a broken back and a foot that he may lose. His g/f has a broken back as well...plus her foot is also messed up. No protective gear except maybe helmets (I forgot to ask but am calling him back in a bit). He has had two surgeries on his foot, and scheduled for another. I guess it was just hanging by tissue. His g/f was partially pinned by the van, and my brother stood up to lift the van, and people were able to pull her out. Then he saw his foot!"

We need to be uber-diligent out there, folks! Keep remembering that we're invisible to all cagers and that these 3,000 lbs plus behemoths will win every single time!

Amen, Mike !!! I still say we need some almost Draconian laws that establish blame almost automatically, (no more "I didn't see him/her" excuses) and mete out harsh punishments when cars and trucks trample rights of way versus bikes, and a huge campaign to publicize the fact.

as long as bikers are seen as a fringe element, we will always be the underdog to cars. the law is on their side.

Never happen, don't forget we're all just biker trash and in a distinct minority.
The general public would scream bloody murder and end up outlawing bikes altogether.

Car, motorcycle collide head on

A driver from Lebanon tried to pass a vehicle on Highway 20 Friday afternoon and ran head on into a motorcyclist from Washington state, killing them both.

The crash happened about 2:45 p.m. near Spicer Drive, north of Lebanon.

Oregon State Police gave this report:

A 1999 Saturn four-door driven by Michelle Irma Eldridge, 46, was westbound near milepost 9, began to pass a vehicle and collided head-on with a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Both Eldridge and the driver of the motorcycle, Rick Dale Stephenson, 50, of Kelso, Wash., died at the scene.

Stephenson was traveling with another motorcyclist who was following at a short distance and witnessed the crash. The second rider was not injured.

Eldridge reportedly had recently moved to the Lebanon area from Phoenix, Ariz. The police said she was wearing safety restraints, and Stephenson was wearing a protective helmet.

Troopers from the OSP Albany office are investigating the crash. On the scene, troopers were assisted by the Albany Police Department, the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Lebanon Fire Department. The Washington State Patrol assisted with notification of next-of-kin.

The highway was closed for 21/2 hours.
