Both are great bikes. I have a 07 Heritage which I just rode 5000 miles in 14 days. It was perfectly comfortable. I have never ridden an RK long distance but I would wager it would be just as comfortable. Sounds like the dealer has more Heritages in stock and would rather unload one of those than the RK. BTW I have a 30 inch inseam and haven't done anything to lower my heritage but I could also flat foot the RK I rode. I think it's all a question of which look do you like.

Test rides or rentals is what I suggest, both are great bikes but they are quite different in a lot of ways.

The Harley website has a tool where you can lay the specs on up to three models side by side and step through them. Might help you with your decision.

Well, my inseam runs 29-30 and I have no problem flat footing my Road King. They are different bikes so it depends on the ride you are looking for. Try them both if you can. Don't let your size sway you to one bike over the other.

One of the big differences is the Softail has a rigid mounted 96b engine
and the Roadking has rubber mounted 96 engine .

I hear that the Softails have a vibration due to the rigid mount
even though they have the balanced engine and the Roadkings are smooth
because of the rubber mount

My boss had a heritage, he sold it after he rode my Electra glide.

Now he has a Ultra.

I wanted a Heritage (I prefer that "old school" look). I test rode a Street Glide a year ago and changed my mind. I ended-up with an ElectraGlide, I love it.

My neighbor went from a Heritage to an RK, his son went from an 06 883 to a 06 RK... in 4 months. They just bought a chopper too. rofl

Either way, welcome to the Darkside.

I just went from an 06 Road King to an 09 ST Deluxe.
IMHO:
The RK vibrated just as much.
The Softail handles much better.
The suspension is equal on both. I doubt anyone could tell the difference. Most of the time, the 'suspension' is in the type of seat you have. Some dressers have mattresses as seats, and I doubt you'd feel a major pothole riding one of those. Unless you were the star of "princess and the pea." :rofl

That's as good advice as there is, IMO. HD will let you test ride their products, and if you rent, you might be able to get the fee creditied toward the purchase price.

Road King is same underneath as all touring bikes, has rubber mounted engine, and Softail is hard mounted counterbalanced engine.

Like Dean says, quite different bikes. Try looking at some test reports, most online mags will have some, and they are probably good for comparisons.

I am NOT agreeing or disagreeing with you, just making a comment I hear all the time.
A co-worker rides a Heritage Softail Classic, "The Softail has a balanced engine, it's better". lol

I think after all is said and done, it comes down to the individual's personal preference.

I just had my EGC seat modified to have a gel section added to the rider seat.
My riding comfort (after doing that to the Sporty) increased, so I assumed it would be better on the EGC. Boy was that a mistake, the original seat was better.

Picked up my Softail Deluxe on Saturday. It puts my 06RK to shame, as far as the ride goes. I love this bike.

A friend just bought a 09 Heritage and his wife bought an 09 E-Glide Classic. He said the softail rides smoother but the e-glide corners better. That is just his opinion, take it with a grain of salt.
