So let's see...if I buy this new British MG from a Chinese autobuilder produced in Oklahoma, does that mean I've bought American? :D If nothing else, we can export it to England!!! :doh (posted in XLF)

The Iconic British MG Coupe Will Be Manufactured by a Chinese Automaker at an Oklahoma Plant

July 13, 2006 (ABC)— - Brien Thorstenberg of the Ardmore, Okla., Chamber of Commerce says he plans to be among the first to buy one of the reborn MG Coupes about to be built in his hometown.

The Chamber's development authority won the checkered flag by convincing China's Nanjing Automobile Group to build the fabled MG sports car at southern Oklahoma's Ardmore Airpark. It will be the first Chinese automotive plant in the United States.

"It is a great opportunity for Ardmore bringing over 550 jobs," Thorstenberg says.

The sleek MG convertible was the hot car for baby boomers to have in the 1960s and '70s, but it was plagued by roof leaks and electrical problems. The British company that made the car, originally called Morris Garages, was founded in the 1920s and eventually went bankrupt.

Nanjing purchased the bankrupt company and expects to begin making a reborn MG on an Ardmore assembly line by 2008.

Thorstenberg says the jobs the company will bring to Oklahoma will be "high paying, good quality jobs."

To lure Nanjing, Oklahoma offered incentives, including spending $15 million on the Ardmore Airpark to allow it to land the 747 cargo planes needed to fly in large car parts. The airpark will become a foreign trade zone.

Five months ago, General Motors closed its Oklahoma City assembly plant, which used to employ more than 2,000 workers. The state is delighted that the Chinese will take advantage of its skilled work force.

Nanjing knows it will pay a premium to build cars outside its home country. It is going to locate its global headquarters in Oklahoma City. A new research facility will be located in Norman at the University of Oklahoma, and the company expects to soon break ground on the assembly line in Ardmore.

The new MG is expected to compete in the market for sports cars priced in the $20,000 to $25,000 range. Company officials believe they have purchased a brand name that still resonates and that its purchase is the ultimate example of a global economy at work.

The company's decision means we're about to have a Chinese company producing an iconic British sports car in America's heartland.

Nanjing promises that the new MG will be dependable, and the people of Oklahoma are thrilled to be a part of resurrecting a classic.

The new Mini Cooper made by BMW,is it British or German? I don't even know where it's built.
The new VW bug, designed in California and built in Mexico,is it German,American or Mexican?:rofl
Chevy trucks built in Mexico, are they Mexican or American?:confused
How about Chryslers with Japanese engines built in the USA , German enginered platforms and Chinese sourced parts :confused :confused :confused .
How about a high end sports car like an Aston Martin, owned by Ford, built in England with a V-12 engine based on two Ford V-6s :crazyeyes
Is it still British?.
Even Rolls Royce now has BMW engines.

It gets even better:

The engine for the Harley V-Rod is based on a Harley designed racing engine.

Final development was done with assistance from Porsche AG.

Harley's had a long standing relationship with Porsche AG going back to the AMF days in the 1970's and development of the Nova V-4 project and 750cc overheadcam V-twin of which neither reached production.

yep, that sure was one ugly sumbitch weren't it. i think i read somewhere that there are still 2 of those things around. of course hd has them both.

kath, a little jeep story for you. my niece and her husband had bought a jeep a few years ago. they had nothing but problems with it from day one. usually engine related. terrible gas mileage. come to find out, the engine that was put in it was a 'mexican' one that wasn't supposed to be in that model, or imported into the states. so they ended up trading in there 2 year old jeep for a saturn. they probably could have gotten some compensation from the company but they were just so tired of dealing with it they just wanted it out of their hands.

Yup,fugly!
I wish I could find a pic of the 750cc OHC bike they built,it was sort of a smaller Sportster like bike, not bad at all for a small cruiser.
I've seen a pic of it in a book but I don't remember what book it was.
Anyone else seen it?

yes, even my stock mag wheels on my '89 sporty have stamped on the inside, you can't see it with the rubber on, "Made in Japan". I guess this is part of what people mean by "Global Economy"

The Original Nova project was not just one engine, it was three, a v-2. a v-4 and a v-6.
It was a modular design, same basic engine, just getting wider.
This engine was shelved to produce the EVO engine, then dusted off to make the VR1000, and was the bases for the V-rod.
